ABOUT US

Mahon & O'Dowd Funeral Directors, Boyle & Gurteen

Mahon & O'Dowd Funeral Directors has a rich tradition of supporting the communities of Boyle, Gurteen, and their surrounding areas.

The journey began in 1972, when Joe and Kathleen Mahon established Mahon Funeral Directors in Kingsland. In 1984, they opened their purpose-built funeral home at Ross Lane, just off the Crescent in Boyle, creating a welcoming space to serve families with care and compassion.

After 48 years of outstanding service, Joe and Kathleen retired in March 2020. Sadly, Joe passed away the following July, leaving behind a legacy of dedication and kindness that continues to inspire.

In June 2020, Mahon Funeral Directors was acquired by Emmet Cooney and his wife Siobhán (née O’Dowd) of O’Dowd Funeral Directors, Gurteen. Siobhán has been deeply involved in her family’s funeral business, working alongside her parents, Raymond and Madeline, throughout her life. Emmet joined the O’Dowd team as an undertaker following the untimely passing of Raymond in 2010.

Together, Emmet and Siobhán united the two long-established businesses, forming Mahon & O'Dowd Funeral Directors, Boyle & Gurteen, to continue their shared tradition of excellence in funeral care.

Our dedicated team is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, to provide compassionate support and guidance when you need it most.

Mahon’s Funeral Home in Boyle has been thoughtfully renovated and modernised to the highest standards, offering a comfortable and dignified setting.

In November 2020, O’Dowd’s Funeral Home in Gurteen opened its doors for the first time, marking a historic moment for the business, which was also originally established in 1972. For the first time, Gurteen now has its own funeral home, further enhancing our ability to serve the community with care and convenience.
